Ain’t it awful, the heat?

Back when I was in college, I lived in a dorm suite with five other young women, one of whom was very into Kurt Weill. She had a recording of Weill’s Street Scene, which starts off with the tenants of a poor New York neighborhood complaining about the summer heat.  Binghamton (this was the State University of NY at Binghamton) was itself undergoing a late summer/early fall heat wave, and so we used to put on the record and sing — or, rather howl — at the top of our lungs:

Ain’t it awful, the heat, ain’t it awful?
Don’t know what I’m gonna do…

We probably got half the words wrong, but it was fun anyway. And now, every time there’s a heat wave, I think of that song. One of these days, I’ve got to get that recording…
